LIFE EGGSHELLENCE project, coordinated by the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica (ITC-AICE) and financed by the European Commission in the framework of the LIFE Programme (Ref. LIFE19 ENV/ES/000121) was presented at the 1st Annual Meeting of the Observatori de Simbiosi Industrial de la Comunitat Valenciana: “Industrial Symbiosis and Territory”, on Wednesday, 4th May 2022 at the Confederación de Empresarios de Valencia (CEV) in an event chaired by the Conseller de Economía Sostenible, Sectores Productivos, Comercio y Trabajo, Rafael Climent.
Specifically, Miguel Catalán, technical director of the company MAINCER, S.A., explained the characteristics of LIFE EGGSHELLENCE, whose objective is to study the feasibility of using eggshell waste to produce, from the calcium carbonate it contains, ceramic compositions for the manufacture of wall tiles.
The firm MAINCER has built a device in its facilities that separates the biological membrane from the eggshell waste in order to be able to use it in the ceramic composition of the future tile.
This is therefore a case of an alliance between two sectors, egg production and ceramics, in which the waste that causes so much inconvenience and cost to egg production companies can be transformed into a secondary raw material that is widely used in the ceramics sector and which is currently extracted as a virgin raw material.
This project would largely avoid this extraction and would convert a waste from one production sector into a product for another sector.
